Concerns over students’ reading comprehension and literacy have caused the department to adjust Fiscal Year 2027 plans.
The Department of Education has announced a plan to improve students’ reading comprehension nationwide. The department highlighted literacy as a core priority heading into the 2027 fiscal year.
The department outlined plans to fund a variety of grants that support tutoring and instruction models, literacy coaching and certification for teachers, and the development of state literacy plans. These grants will also expand students’ access to books and increase research and funding in implementing effective protocols.
The department reported that 12th graders have had the lowest reading scores in recorded history, with close to 70 percent of 4th and 8th graders unable to read at a competent level. The department stated that the lowest-graded students are falling further behind than ever, causing more concern over educational standards.
